The Reverend may have been influenced by Thomas Hearne, as much of what he was reporting was copied directly from Hearne who wrote The History and Antiquities of Glastonbury in 1722. It seems that before the age of copyright laws it was common practice to repeat verbatim what had been previously written. While this has the effect of preserving information remarkably well it also has the effect of preserving attitudes, errors and hampering new research. A cynicism under the guise of healthy ‘‘scientific’’ skepticism toward the Glastonbury legends for example, is to be found in all accounts, and inaccurate measurements of the Mary Chapel are inherited from author to author rather than their actually taking measures on the ground.
